In recent years Dresden has developed with a tremendous pace to one of the leading scientific centers in the areas of cell and developmental biology, biomedicine, biophysics and bioengineering. Biopolis Dresden is characterized by a vibrant international community of researchers that performs cross-disciplinary research at the highest level in state-of-the art research centers at the Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG), the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI-PKS) and several Leibniz Institutes. The unique combination of scientific expertise makes Biopolis Dresden a highly attractive place for young researchers working towards a doctoral degree.

The Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering (DIGS-BB) in joint association with the International Max Planck Research School for Molecular Cell Biology and Bioengineering (IMPRS-MCBB), representing a faculty of more than 70 group leaders, offers International PhD Programs that provide outstanding opportunities for university graduates to work towards a PhD or MD/PhD with ambitious thesis projects in the following three interconnected research areas:

1. Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology (CellDevo Program)
2. Regenerative Medicine (RegMed Program)
3. Nanobiotechnology, Biophysics and Bioengineering (NanoBio Program)

The PhD Programs of the DIGS-BB offer structured training programs composed of mandatory and elective modules. Each PhD Program provides an in-depth expert training in program-specific research areas for enrolled PhD students, and training modules specifically offered for PhD students of the other programs. While the extent and structure of the training is the same in each of the three PhD programs, the contents are defined according to the research area and specific methods relevant to this field. Central training offered by the DIGS-BB is open to all PhD students, and by such closely links the PhD programs to the benefit of the students.

Graduate training at the Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering is research-oriented, and each PhD student is directly affiliated with one of the participating research groups, in which most of the thesis work is conducted. Faculty members have a primary affiliation with one of the PhD programs offered, however, this does not mean that a PhD student participating in a different DIGS-BB PhD program may not be hosted in this group.
