At the Fraunhofer IWS the demands of micro material processing are
addressed with frequency multiplying Nd:YAG, fiber lasers and short pulse lasers. The utilization of excimer lasers, Nd:YAG lasers, with and without frequency multiplying as well as CO2 lasers, allows it to influence and process materials with light in the wavelength range from 193 nm - 10.6 µm. The variety of laser types is used for micro material processing in combination with precision processing stations. These allow numerous degrees of freedom in motion for the different process technologies and part handling.

At the IWS there is extensive experience available in the range of microprocessing e.g. of plastics, ceramics, semiconductors, metals as well as biological and biocompatible materials. The processing examples come from the area of micromechanics, microelectronics, microfluidics, sensor technology, textile industry, and life science. Highlights include work in the biological field concerning the functionalisation of polymers for Lab-on-chip systems and of endoscopic stabilizers for minimal invasive surgery. Additional application examples for micro material processing are ceramic nozzles, ultrasonic sensors, magnetic sensors, and elements for microfluidic components.

Main activities are concentrated on joining of metallic and non-metallic as well as CFRP/ metal composites for structural and turbine
components, to heat insulation of rocket engines and last but not least to development and use of unique testing equipment for the measurement of mechanical, thermal shock and thermal cycling properties of highly loadable ceramics, coatings, heat insulation layers and C/SiC-metal composites.

A special engagement is focused on the development and industrial application of advanced laser beam welding technologies for the effective welding of metallic 3D-structural components, to a welding
adopted component design and to the optimization of the mechanical performance of welded structures. For this purpose, the Fraunhofer IWS possesses a worldwide unique laser beam welding station with a
working space of 10 m x 3.5 m x 1 m with two 3D-movable laser welding heads for simultaneous both side welding, an integrated 3Dmovable clamping device, a seam following and detection system as well as integrated measures for weld quality assurance.
