German Biomass Research Centre

Competences and Primary Activities:
How can the potentials of bioenergy be best used? In order to answer this
question, the scientists of the DBFZ are looking for methods that facilitate an
effective and sustainable use of solid, liquid, and gaseous bioenergy sources.
That is why the DBFZ scientists are carrying out potential analyses, feasibility
studies, and practical tests in the laboratories of the institute’s own research
center. Their objectives are to make the utilization of bioenergy technically
simpler and safer, environmentally friendlier, and economically more promising.

Key Research Activities:
In light of all these aspects, the German Biomass Research Center seeks to
provide scientific support to the process of efficiently integrating biomass as a
precious resource for a sustainable energy supply. The DBFZ’s focus is on applied basic research – including technological, ecological, economic, social,
and energy management aspects – along the entire utilization chain ranging
from production to biomass provision to conversion (where necessary) all the
way to utilization as an energy source.

Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) has a research focus on energy from biomass. One main advantage of biomass is its ability to provide energy (heat, power and cooling) on demand. It can act as an important energy store for the energy system. Thus, it has the potential to stabilize power grids and to ensure an economically feasible renewable power production.
DBFZ is conducting research on questions concerning the overall energy system (How and where should energy storages be used? What are the requirements for them?) as well as on developing technologies (How can biogas plants run more flexible? How can biogenic solid fuels act as storages? How can biogenic synthetic natural gas help to store energy?).
