The tradition of acknowledged research and vocational training in the transportation sector was strengthened in 1950 by the establishment of the Faculty of Transportation Science and Technology at the former Dresden Technical University (TH Dresden) and, starting from 1952, at the previous „Friedrich List“ University for Transportation, and it is continued today at the „Friedrich List“ Faculty of Transportation and Traffic Sciences again at the Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden) - which is in this form unique in Europe.
Altogether six professorships at the Institute for Railed Vehicles and Railway Technology and at the Institute for Railway Systems and Public Transport work in the various railway segments. Students of the study courses transport engineering and economic engineering technology receive comprehensive knowledge of railway systems. In addition to a wide range of basic railway technological knowledge, an advanced teaching content is offered for special units as part of the in-depth modules of rail vehicle engineering and traction unit technology for mechanical engineering students.
The Chair of Dynamics and Mechanism Design of the Technical University of Dresden deals with the application of storage systems on vehicles, especially on railway vehicles. Storages concepts and their impact on the dynamic behavior and the energy consumption of the vehicle are evaluated with simulation methods. For this purpose the operation strategy of the vehicle can be optimized for the storage. In addition to the energy consumption the lifetime expectancy of the storage is evaluated depending on the user profile.
