The Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology at the TU Dresden is the only research body in the
textile and confection field at the university level with two professorships.
The interdisciplinary research is concentrated in the fields of lightweight engineering, textile reinforced concrete and medical textiles.
Research focusing on CAD pattern construction and the confection of technical textiles round out the research spectrum.
In the area of lightweight engineering, ITM possesses over 20 years experience in the design, construction and testing of fiber reinforced polymers. Innovative thread and fabric design, near net shape performs, i.e. spacer fabrics, and the necessary machine modifications are all results of a long development process.
For future applications in the aerospace industry, a lightweight system based on multi-material-design is being developed in an effort to improve material and energy efficiency. New continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites play a key role in this development, however this material’s full potential has not yet been fully explored. To discover and understand the full potential of this composite material, intensive research is underway. A major goal of this research is increased applications of efficient textile structures composed of high-performance fiber material in the aerospace industry.
