The embedding of the institute in the Faculty of Geosciences, Geotechnics and Mining represents a unique situation in comparison with other German universities. The institute was founded in 1968.
The complex field of geotechnics is represented in research and teaching by the three columns of
* soil mechanics, geotechnics in mining and foundation engineering
* geomechanics, rock mechanics/rock engineering
* geology, waste disposal and geotechnical remediation
The importance of the dealing with the environment and the problem solution under ecological and economical points of view at the investigation and the research of techniques and feasibility at the Geotechnical Institute let to the foundation of the "Interdisciplinary center of excellence for brownfields" (CiF e. V.) together with the professors of the Institute of Business Economics and Management.
