Offer

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf is new member of the Helmholtz Association as of January 2011. It is engaged in basic and application-oriented research. The main topics are:

- Advanced Materials Research
- Cancer Research
- Nuclear Safety Research

Five major research facilities are operated at the HZDR:
- Radiation source ELBE
- Ion Beam Center
- Rossendorf Beamline at ESRF
- PET-Center
- TOPFLOW facility
- the Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory, is currently being equipped in 2007

The scientific scope of the HZDR is divided into:
Six Institutes:
- Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research
- Institute of Radiopharmacy
- Institute of Nuclear and Hadron Physics
- Institute of Safety Research
- Institute of Radiochemistry
- Dresden High Magnetic Field Laboratory

Our research on electrochemical storage technologies focuses on liquid metal batteries, i.e. high-temperature systems with completely liquid inventory for peak shaving and load leveling applications. In this frame, we concentrate on the scale-up and the fluid dynamics of these devices. A safe and reliable operation of the large cells requires undisturbed density stratification and the suppression of any instability. Experiments on liquid metal mock-ups provide direct information on flow fields and material distribution in the cells. Computational fluid dynamic simulations and theoretical investigations complement the experiments.

Competences and Primary Activities:

The long-term goal of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) is
to conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of energy, health and matter. Two
of its eight research institutes are concerned with the question of how to utilize
resources in an efficient, safe, and sustainable way: The Helmholtz Institute
Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) and the Institute of Resource Ecology
(IRE).

Key Research Activities:

• Material and energy efficient extraction and use of raw materials: processing,
metallurgy and recycling, resource analytics, modelling and valuation
• Providing German industry with sustainable resource technologies
• Nuclear waste management: long-lived radionuclides in biological systems
and disposal sites
• Reactor safety
• Particle-mediated transport in geosystems
