Field of main application: The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (IfT) was founded in 1992 for the investigation of physical and chemical processes in the polluted troposphere. Meanwhile, a well-defined and globally unique research profile of IfT emerged, with a focus on aerosols, i.e. small airborne particles, and clouds. IfT´s mission is to improve the understanding and forecast of tropospheric multiphase systems, which is a main field of activity in climate research. At IfT, investigations on the troposphere´s state and characteristics are carried out, especially in anthropogenicly-polluted regions.
Important research questions are related to physical and chemical aerosol and cloud processes and atmospheric effects of aerosols and clouds. They are answered by coordinated laboratory and field experiments by means of respective modeling.
